Resin Casting Blue Roses

The steps taken for this process of resin casting was cutting a block of wood based on the size of what I wanted it to go around. Here the wood is cut for small ceramic roses similar to the larger one I've done before, the clay becomes less malleable the smaller it is and these roses are smaller than the palm of my hand so I thought resin would make them look better. The block of wood cut will need to be sanded well, especially around the edges as it could potently break the sheet when placed in the vacuum former. The block of wood should be slippery enough to wedge out of the mould and a screw inserted to pull it out without damaging the mould. After this point its about spraying the mould and making the resin mixture that gets poured in steadily. The resin should be poured in a vacuum degassing unit, as shown here with bubbles surfacing, it needed that done more because the resin is deep. 


Bird House

A winged shaped bird house I designed as part of 3D making in woodwork. The wood used was called pine and it's commonly used for bird houses because of how the wood can handle water. It doesn't hold water to the point where its heavy from absorbency. The shape itself was probably a difficult design choice because the slats going around do not dip easily with circular shapes, mostly due to their chunkiness. At the beginning I designed various shapes that a bird house might suit but found I preferred the wing shape. The shape of the wing is viewed as a stylistic choice for many items like jewellery and more interesting than making a common box with a slat roof. Despite its flaws the bird house still fits its purpose and it should be easy enough for birds to live in.

Final Pieces For Colour Project

Here's the ceramic pieces that I've finished doing, I neatened them by sanding down and glazing them. Along with these I have framed my resin casts with wood that's glued and stapled together. 



I find that my bowl appears rather gritty as I used oxides to pick out certain indentations in the clay. I do prefer the samples where green slip was applied over the red clay instead of the white slip. Perhaps to correct this I could have used solid glazes, but prevented it from setting into the scratched mark making that revealed the brown clay.
  The process for doing this frame was by measuring wood to and cutting the ends diagonally on either side. Once all of it was attached an electric screw driver drilled holes to where the wire would be fitted.

Casting Resin

For this part of the project I choose five of my green coloured items that were a reasonably small size. The small items from the collection of mine needed to avoid undercuts and strange edges. When being placed in the former tray the proportions of the items. When this has been done a black plastic called the polystyrene is inserted over the items. The heat of the plastic can push back so you keep pressing down the former tray lever until it covers the items in a wrap. Once done you take it out and spray the plastic so the resin does not stick to the polystyrene. Wire is added into each mould, to do this take the pliers and twist it so it fits in the mould. The wire needs to be straight and taped down. Then lastly make sure it's all level and will not move around easily for the resin to be poured.
